INTERVIEW WITH STEFANO BASSAN AND GIANLUCA SIGISMONDI:
We are Stefano Bassan and Gianluca Sigismondi (24), we graduated in Product Design in 2019 at the IED European Institute of Design in Milan. We started collaborating during the course of studies concluded with a thesis together. During the conclusion of the thesis we supported the CARA \ DAVIDE studio working on different projects, especially the one for Rinascente. From here was born the right energy that led us to create Finemateria.
What is your mission?
We would like to show that we don’t have to look at age. We like to be direct and transparent. We try to hit emotions, leave a message, tell a story. Regaining the material value.
How would you define your style?
I think it’s still early days and in any case we don’t like to catalog ourselves. What we seek is to be ourselves. We have a simple language, full of stimuli, synthesized in thoughts and matter as protagonists.
What inspires you?
Surely every trip is an incredible experience that contaminates us. We try to gather stimuli from what surrounds us, we also have a careful vision on fashion and photography, we believe in cross-pollination.
Tell us about the choice of materials and the creative process.
The path begins with dialogue and the comparison of ideas and stimuli, by criticizing them we try to highlight the key points. We don’t want to work on instinct, in fact, ideas need reflection, time and pauses. Once a concept has been created, we transform it into language and matter. The second phase starts with material research, a process that we like to carry out in contact with companies and artisans, places where knowledge and opportunities are high.
What is your favorite project to date and why?
COMFORT / UNCOMFORT is our first project and contains our thinking. It has a minimal, raw, no-frills aesthetic. We are satisfied because it is allowing us to show off our qualities.
How do you combine functionality and aesthetics?
Functionality and aesthetics are united by simplicity. It is the person who subjectively decides and becomes part of it.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment we are carrying out COMFORT / UNCOMFORT as a communication project, presenting it in October it still needs a lot of visibility. We are studying ways to exhibit it in the coming months. For the design, however, we are developing new ideas, but without haste.
What is the element that determines the success of a project?
Consistency, freshness and emotions. Much starts from communication, you have to be clear and easily understandable. Aesthetics are subjective but if you like it it helps most of all. The important thing is to have the courage to try.
In which direction do you see the world of design going?
Design right now is understanding that it needs to slow down and think. Companies will be more careful to produce, investing more time in developing strong and different projects. The smaller realities, on the other hand, will push a lot in self-production and self-promotion. In general, one should no longer be caught up in the frenzy dictated by the market (Salone del Mobile) but find one’s own balance.
