Interview with Elena Maggiulli:
My name is Elena Maggiulli, I am 28 years old and I am an Italian photographer born in Rome.
How was your passion for photography born?
I have always had a passion for photography and for more than two years I have specialized in portrait and fashion photography. The reason is due to the fact that through this type of photography I am able to express myself, my moods and my feelings.
Is there, or has there been, someone or something that has influenced your work?
My work is influenced every day by my surroundings, the cities I visit, the people I know, the events that happen, the films I see, and the photographs of the artists I follow.
What are your main references and inspirations?
For a while I lived in Paris, it is a city that has given me so much both personally and photographically. Its atmosphere, a little nostalgic, romantic, sometimes melancholy, certainly inspires my photography, probably because they are concepts that often reflect me.
Which photographers have inspired you the most?
There are many emerging photographers from whom I draw inspiration. Some names are: Tom Craig, Fanny Latour Lambert, Noémi Ottilia Szabo, Felicity Ingram. But of all, Marta Bevacqua was certainly fundamental, she helped me a lot and to whom I had the pleasure of being an assistant.
What is beauty for you?
For me, beauty is a subjective concept, it is a balance or imbalance between the elements that gives pleasure to the observer.
As a fashion photographer, you need a stylist, a hairdresser and a make-up artist. How do you choose these decisive team members?
In my field it is essential to be able to collaborate with a professional and competent team. All the figures on the set are important, without them it would not be possible to carry out a complete and precise work in the smallest details. I choose my team on the basis of several elements, first of all their competence in the field, the quality of their work and, not least, compatibility on an empathic level. For me it is essential that a pleasant and balanced environment is created during a job.
The photo you are most proud of?
I am linked to all the photos I have taken over the years. In particular to those you made in Paris with Jazzmine Berger, a fantastic person and exceptional model. I am very attached to them because they remind me of a beautiful period in my life.
How did you approach the lockdown on a creative level?
I spent the months of lockdown in Paris. During that time I didn’t leave home, I started drawing with the tablet, I organized lunches, dinners and birthdays with my roommates, I took photos remotely with models in other cities, I spent a lot of time on the phone with my parents dear and my friends … and I have seen all 10 seasons of Friends!
